Fatty liver cases rising silently in India, Medanta doctors stress early lifestyle changes for recovery

With fatty liver disease emerging as a major health concern across India, specialists from Medanta – The Medicity have warned that the condition is affecting millions silently and could lead to severe complications if left untreated. According to experts, nearly 39 per cent of India’s adult population is estimated to be living with fatty liver disease, with cases also increasing among children. Doctors said most patients today suffer from Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), a condition linked to obesity, diabetes, unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles. Dr. Pawan Rawal, Senior Director of Gastroenterology at Medanta Gurugram, said fatty liver is often called a “silent disease” because symptoms usually do not appear in the early stages. He said the disease is often detected only through ultrasound scans, blood tests or after complications begin.

Dr. Rawal stressed that the condition can be reversed in its early stages through sustained lifestyle changes, including healthier diets, regular exercise and avoiding alcohol and smoking. He advised people to consume fruits, vegetables, whole grains and omega-3-rich foods while avoiding sugary drinks, processed foods and fried items. In Dibrugarh, healthcare professionals said awareness around preventive healthcare and lifestyle-related diseases is steadily growing in the town, with rising demand for specialised consultations, diagnostic screenings and wellness-focused medical services. Local residents are increasingly seeking expert advice on liver health amid changing food habits and sedentary urban lifestyles.

Medanta announced that Dr. Rawal will be available for consultations in Dibrugarh on April 29 at Dibrugarh Medicity. The hospital has also launched a dedicated Northeast helpline offering support in Assamese, Bengali, Nagamese, English and Hindi for appointments and medical guidance.
