Retired Gauhati University Professor Dipali Sarkar and her husband, Manash Kumar Ghosh, are among the tourists reported missing after devastating flash floods struck Nepal on August 26. Sarkar, who retired as the Head of the Department of Physics at Gauhati University, had travelled with her husband as part of a 32-member Kailash-Manasarovar pilgrimage group from Kolkata. Assam’s Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), located at Panbari near Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, has completed 25 years of dedicated service to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation. Established on August 28, 2002, CWRC was India’s first dedicated facility for hand-raising, treating and rehabilitating orphaned and injured wild animals before releasing them back into their natural habitats. Over the years, the centre has emerged as a major institution for science-based wildlife conservation. The Northeast can play a much larger role in India’s rapidly evolving space economy by leveraging its unique geography, strategic location, talent and institutional capabilities, speakers said at the Northeast India Space Workshop 2026 held in Guwahati.
