Assam marked the first death anniversary of legendary singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on Saturday with musical tributes, remembrance programmes, and blood donation drives held across the state as part of the observance of “Zubeen Divas.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma participated in a blood donation camp at Vajpayee Bhawan, the BJP headquarters in Guwahati, joining party workers in paying tribute to the late artiste through an act of public service.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said the BJP had organized blood donation camps across Assam to commemorate the day.
“Today is the first death anniversary of our beloved Zubeen Garg. BJP workers across the state are observing the day by donating blood. My colleagues and I also donated blood at the party headquarters, while similar camps are being held in different districts,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, around 3,800 people registered for the blood donation initiative, while blood had already been collected from nearly 1,000 donors.
He thanked BJP workers and state BJP president Dilip Saikia for organizing the programme and said people across Assam were remembering the artiste through various events and community initiatives.
Recalling his association with Zubeen Garg, Sarma said the singer shared a deep bond with the people of Assam and carried a vision for the state’s future.
“When he was alive, we spent many beautiful moments with him. He had a dream for Assam, and the people of the state will always remember him,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister noted that Garg’s legacy was not limited to music alone but also included his social and cultural contributions.
“Whether culturally or socially, we must remember the path shown by Zubeen Garg. He was someone who genuinely loved the people of Assam,” he added.
Sarma also highlighted how Zubeen Divas had evolved into a people-driven observance rather than a government initiative.
“The government did not create Zubeen Divas. The people did. And when people create something, the government follows. Wherever the people go, the government will go,” he said.
Across Assam, thousands of admirers gathered at Zubeen Kshetra in Kamarkuchi and other locations to pay homage to the iconic artiste. One year after his passing, Zubeen Garg’s presence continued to resonate through his songs, memories, and the countless lives he touched.
