Stones were pelted at Congress leaders and workers today during the party’s campaigning for Lok Sabha bye-election in Assam’s Nagaon constituency.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi said that AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan was injured in the stone pelting by alleged BJP workers.
“Just now while heading to an election rally in Nagaon, Assam BJP workers attacked the car in which former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel and myself were travelling with stones and bottles. Police were requested much in advance to control the crowd but the situation was allowed to escalate. The Election Commission of India should continue to remain a mute spectator to such acts of violence in BJP ruled states. In fact BJP should open a recruitment cell for criminals,” Gogoi said in a post on X.
Sharing a video, Gogoi wrote, “This is the state of the car belonging to the Congress candidate Sivamoni Bora. AICC Secretary Manoj Chauhan was inside and has been hit by a stone in his ribs. Looks like BJP has been organizing training programs on stone pelting.”
He also alleged that Congress candidate for the bypoll and former MLA Sivamoni Bora has not been provided with any security.
Voting for the bypoll will be held on October 6 and the counting of votes will take place on October 9.
