Assam budget fails to offer roadmap for addressing real problems, alleges ajp

Opposition party, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has stated that the state government’s Budget for the financial year 2026-27 “fails to reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people.”
“Instead, the budget merely documents a vision of an imagined Assam without providing any realistic roadmap for implementation. Under such circumstances, the budget can only be described as a compilation of unrealistic dreams,” AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan stated in a joint statement on Friday.
Terming the Budget as “nothing more than a game of numbers and an unrealistic display of statistics,” they said it offers no practical roadmap to address the real problems faced by the people of Assam.
“The government proudly claims that the size of the state Budget has nearly tripled over the past decade to Rs 2,00,782 crore in 2025-26, and that the share of capital expenditure has increased from 58 percent to 85 percent. However, the real question is: what has been the actual outcome of this massive expenditure?” they asked.
The party claimed that the government has failed to provide any comparative data showing improvements in unemployment, per capita income, or the actual earnings of farmers.
“Merely increasing expenditure cannot be considered evidence of development. The real test is whether the benefits of that spending have reached ordinary people,” the AJP leaders said.
They expressed concern that the government’s attention remains overwhelmingly focused on large urban-centric projects such as Aerotropolis, Gelephu Mindfulness City, and the Guwahati Satellite Cities initiative. “There are no practical and specific plans for infrastructure development in Upper Assam, the Barak Valley, or the tea garden regions. Instead of reducing regional disparities, this budget is likely to deepen them further,” the leaders alleged.
They further stated that development cannot be achieved by acquiring the land of indigenous people for ambitious projects.
