Assam budget’s export subsidy for premium ctc tea will strengthen global competitiveness, says guwahati tea auction buyers association

The Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association (GTABA) has welcomed the Assam Government’s decision to introduce a Rs 3 per kg export subsidy for premium Assam CTC tea in the State Budget 2026–27, calling it a landmark initiative for the state’s tea industry.

Describing the announcement as a “historic first”, GTABA secretary Dinesh Bihani said this is the first dedicated export incentive for premium Assam CTC tea in the State Budget and is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Assam tea in international markets.

“The export subsidy is a timely and visionary measure. It will help exporters remain competitive in the global market at a time when the industry is facing increasing competition and rising logistics costs. This incentive will encourage higher exports of premium quality Assam CTC tea and improve price realisation across the value chain,” Bihani said.

He said, “The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), India’s largest CTC tea auction centre, is expected to benefit significantly from this initiative. Increased export demand is likely to attract greater participation from buyers and exporters, strengthen auction volumes, and reinforce GTAC’s position as the preferred sourcing platform for quality Assam Good quality CTC tea.”

Bihani further said the policy would benefit tea producers, manufacturers, buyers and exporters while contributing to higher foreign exchange earnings and sustainable growth of Assam’s tea sector.

Notably, Assam government has been giving incentive for orthodox production.

GTABA further congratulated the Government of Assam for introducing the pioneering export incentive.

The Association expressed confidence that the measure would provide a long-term boost to Assam’s good quality CTC tea exports and further strengthen the global identity of Assam tea.
