Following a resounding victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is preparing for a historic third consecutive term in Assam. Caretaker Chief Minister and CM-elect Himanta Biswa Sarma has indicated that the new state cabinet is expected to consist of 18 to 19 ministers. This announcement comes as the state gears up for the grand swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Sarma, who led the alliance to a commanding 102-seat victory in the 126-member house, remains the primary architect of the new administration. Addressing the media, he clarified that while he has a tentative list of names in mind, the final composition of the ministry will only be solidified after a high-level consultation with BJP National President Nitin Nabin, who is expected to arrive in Guwahati late Monday night. “There is no written list yet,” Sarma stated, emphasizing that the party’s overall guidance and the national leadership’s input are crucial before any names are officially announced.
The political landscape for this term is notably distinct, as the NDA’s sweep has left the opposition significantly diminished, holding only 24 seats. Speculation remains rife regarding whether the cabinet will feature fresh faces or rely on the seasoned veterans of the previous term. Sarma has been guarded on this front, noting that the balance of the cabinet must reflect the party’s strategic goals for the next five years. The induction of alliance partners from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the UPPL/BPF is also expected to be a key point of discussion during the final deliberations.
With high-profile attendees including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah expected at the ceremony, the formation of the cabinet is seen as a pivotal moment for the state. The new government aims to continue its focus on infrastructure, social welfare, and the protection of indigenous interests—themes that defined the 2026 campaign. As Guwahati prepares for the festivities, all eyes remain on the Raj Bhavan and the CM-elect’s residence for the official list of those who will lead Assam into its next chapter of governance
