Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Sunday launched ‘Zubeen Week’ to commemorate Zubeen Garg and recognise his contribution to Assam’s cultural and public life.
The first day of the week-long programme was observed as ‘Nahor Day’, with AJP district, constituency and panchayat committees across the state planting Nahor saplings. The organisation has set a target of planting one lakh Nahor saplings across Assam.
The central programme in Guwahati was attended by AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan, and leaders and workers of the Kamrup Metropolitan district committee. The programme began at Zubeen Garg’s residence in Kharghuli, where party leaders and workers planted Nahor saplings on the premises of his under-construction house.
Saplings were also planted at Bijoy Nagar in Narengi, Noonmati, the Bihutoli at Kharghuli and ‘Zubeen Khetra’ in Sonapur. The Kharghuli Bihutoli is associated with Zubeen Garg’s cultural activities, including the inauguration of his first Bihu programme of the year.
As part of the statewide programme, AJP also planted Nahor saplings at Dr Bhupen Hazarika Samanway Tirtha and the Swahid Smarak Kshetra at Boragaon.
Speaking on the occasion, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said ‘Zubeen Week’ was being organised to take Zubeen Garg’s ideas, creative outlook and life philosophy to the younger generation. He said the programme also seeks to highlight Zubeen Garg’s association with nature and his humanist outlook.
AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan said Zubeen Garg’s ideas and philosophy could serve as a source of inspiration for the younger generation and encourage new perspectives on social and cultural issues.
On Monday, the second day of ‘Zubeen Week’ will be observed as ‘Manabotar Din’ through the programme ‘Manuhe Manuhor Babe’ (For Humanity). Under the programme, 101 AJP leaders and workers in each district will donate blood.
The ‘Zubeen Week’ programmes will continue until September 19, observed as Zubeen Divas, with activities centred on Zubeen Garg’s creative work, values and contribution to Assam’s cultural life.
