Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President and Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has taken a special initiative to preserve the glorious history of Jorhat’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle and pass it on to future generations.
The MP has announced a grant of Rs 8 lakh from his Local Area Development Fund (MPLAD) for the infrastructural upgradation of the Freedom Fighters’ Bhawan of the Jorhat District Freedom Fighters’ Association.
Announcing the decision through social media, Gogoi described Jorhat as a witness to an important chapter in India’s freedom struggle. Recalling Jorhat’s inseparable contribution to Assam’s resistance against British rule, Gogoi said that Maniram Dewan and Piyali Barua were hanged by the British in Jorhat in 1858.
He further said that freedom fighters from Jorhat actively participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement. Even during British Viceroy Lord Irwin’s visit to Jorhat in 1931, local leaders displayed black flags and staged a protest with remarkable courage.
Similarly, Gogoi noted that the supreme sacrifice of martyr Kushal Konwar, who was hanged at Jorhat Jail during the Quit India Movement in 1942, will remain an immortal chapter in the history of Assam.
Describing the Freedom Fighters’ Bhawan as much more than just a building, Gogoi said it is a living document of the memories, sacrifices and people’s struggles associated with India’s freedom movement. He said the archive to be developed there would preserve, for future generations, the history stretching from Gomdhar Konwar’s uprising in 1828 to the Quit India Movement of 1942.
Emphasising that history is not merely something to be remembered but that preserving history is also a sacred responsibility of every citizen, Gogoi said the sacrifices of the martyrs continue to inspire us. He added that the grant has been made with a commitment to preserving these memories in a more organised manner and keeping their legacy alive for future generations.
