TRAI drive test flags network gaps on Assam highway stretch

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the findings of an Independent Drive Test (IDT) conducted along the Lanka–Narainpur Railway Bridge stretch of NH-27 and NH-627 in Assam, assessing the quality of mobile network services offered by telecom operators in the region.
The drive test, conducted between March 10 and March 18, 2026, covered nearly 190 km of highway routes and seven hotspot locations under the Assam Licensed Service Area (LSA). The exercise evaluated key Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, including coverage, call drop rates, call setup success rates, speech quality, and mobile data speeds across 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks.
According to the report, Reliance Jio recorded the highest average download speed at 88.21 Mbps, followed by Airtel at 66.50 Mbps. Vodafone Idea (VIL) achieved 16.84 Mbps, while BSNL recorded 4.86 Mbps. In upload speeds, Airtel led with 13.63 Mbps, followed by Jio at 6.61 Mbps, VIL at 3.99 Mbps and BSNL at 3.10 Mbps.
The report also highlighted coverage gaps and call drops across all operators. Airtel reported 9 dropped calls, BSNL 12, Jio 14 and VIL 21. Coverage challenges were observed at several locations along the route, including stretches passing through BamunGaon, Dijabora, Mupa, Didaodip, Retzol and Damchara.
