Toxic Parthenium Spread Along NH-127 Sparks Fresh Concern in Nagaon

The widespread growth of toxic Parthenium weed along National Highway-127 in Assam’s Nagaon district has once again become a major concern for residents, with locals warning of potential health and environmental risks as the invasive plant continues to spread across large stretches of the highway. The weed has reportedly covered significant portions of the roadside from Uriagaon to Amoni, growing densely on both sides of the highway and affecting several nearby communities. Residents living along the route, as well as daily commuters, have expressed concern over the unchecked expansion of the plant, which is known for its harmful effects on human health and the environment.According to local residents, exposure to Parthenium has already caused health problems for several people in the area. The weed is widely recognised as an invasive species that can trigger allergic reactions, skin irritation, respiratory difficulties and other health-related issues, particularly among individuals who come into frequent contact with it.

Locals said the presence of the weed has increased considerably in recent months, making the situation more alarming for families residing near the affected stretches of the highway. Many residents fear that if immediate action is not taken, the infestation could spread further and pose greater risks to public health.Despite the growing concern, residents alleged that no fresh steps have been taken by the National Highways Authority to remove or control the weed along the affected corridor. They claimed that the absence of regular monitoring and maintenance has allowed Parthenium to re-establish itself across large sections of the roadside. “The weed has spread across both sides of the highway again. People are worried because it affects health and continues to grow unchecked,” a local resident said, reflecting the concerns shared by many in the area. The issue had previously drawn the attention of the district administration. Earlier, Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma, accompanied by officials from the concerned departments, visited the affected locations and initiated measures aimed at controlling the spread of the invasive plant.

However, according to residents, those efforts failed to provide a lasting solution. They said the weed has gradually returned and expanded across several stretches of NH-127, indicating the need for a more sustained and long-term management strategy. With the situation worsening, residents have once again appealed to District Commissioner Devashish Sharma to intervene and ensure that effective measures are implemented without delay. They have urged the administration and the concerned authorities to launch a comprehensive weed-control programme, including regular monitoring, timely removal and preventive measures to stop further spread.
