Navi Mumbai International Airport Goes Global: Air India Express Connects MMR to Abu Dhabi in Landmark Flight

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) officially entered the global aviation map on July 15, 2026, with the successful launch of its first scheduled international flight to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Operated by Air India Express, the inaugural thrice-weekly service marks a massive milestone for the greenfield facility, commencing international operations less than 200 days after the airport initiated domestic flights on December 25, 2025. The landmark event also ensures that every facility managed under the portfolio of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) is now internationally connected. According to AAHL Chief Executive Officer Arun Bansal, this launch kicks off a dynamic new expansion phase aimed at establishing Navi Mumbai as a preferred global travel gateway. Air India Express Chairman Nipun Aggarwal highlighted that the route is part of a dual-airport strategy to seamlessly complement their existing network out of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The introduction of international services is expected to significantly ease air traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Since starting domestic operations, NMIA has scaled rapidly, already connecting 46 local destinations and serving over 2.3 million passengers. Beyond passenger travel, the inaugural flight also carried the airport’s first global perishable export cargo shipment, highlighting its emerging capabilities as a vital logistical hub for high-value, time-sensitive goods. Designed to eventually scale to a capacity of 90 million passengers annually, the airport’s launch of global operations signals a major boost for regional trade, tourism, and connectivity.
