Major Drug Bust: 39,345 Bottles of Suspected Cough Syrup Worth ₹2.5 Crore Seized at Agartala Railway Station

In a major anti-drug operation, the Tripura Police’s Special Branch, in collaboration with the Government Railway Police (GRP), intercepted a large consignment of suspected banned cough syrup valued at over ₹2.5 crore from the parcel van of the Deoghar Express at Agartala Railway Station on the night of July 2.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police teams conducted a detailed search of the parcel coach and recovered 39,345 bottles of suspected Eskuf and Fairdyl cough syrup. The bottles had been concealed inside 81 sealed metal drums in an apparent attempt to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.

The joint operation was carried out by the Government Railway Police (GRP), the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and the Special Branch of Tripura Police as part of the state’s intensified drive against drug trafficking.

Inspector General (Special Branch) Krishnendu Chakravertty said the seizure reflects the state’s continued commitment to curbing the illegal narcotics trade. He noted that a similar consignment had recently been intercepted at Jirania Railway Station in West Tripura district, adding that smugglers have increasingly been using the railway network to transport both large and small consignments.

He said the police remain committed to the vision of a “Nasha Mukti Tripura” and are taking swift action whenever credible intelligence is received.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to identify those behind the transportation and distribution of the suspected contraband. Police are also working to trace the origin of the consignment and determine its intended destination.
