Indian National Congress Holds Talks on Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly

Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said the party high command will take the final decision on the appointment of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Assam after holding consultations with party MLAs. Gogoi made the statement after returning from meetings with the Congress central leadership regarding the selection of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said the decision would be taken by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) after discussions with the newly elected legislators of the party. “The All India Congress Committee will take the decision on who will become the party leader,” Gogoi said.

He also informed that a meeting of opposition legislators was scheduled to take place on Thursday evening as part of the consultation process. According to Gogoi, the Congress leadership is holding discussions with MLAs before finalising the name of the Leader of the Opposition in the new Assembly. He further said that Congress MLAs would visit the Assam Legislative Assembly together on Thursday, indicating the party’s attempt to maintain coordination and unity ahead of the Assembly proceedings. The Congress secured 19 seats in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections and emerged as the principal opposition party in the 126-member House.

Political attention has now shifted towards the party’s internal leadership structure in the state legislature, especially after the formation of the new Assembly and the beginning of the first session. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), returned to power in Assam with a clear majority, while the Congress is preparing to play the role of the main opposition in the Assembly.
