Cancer care success strengthens Manipal Hospitals’ presence in North Bengal

Manipal Hospital Rangapani has treated a 71-year-old music teacher from Cooch Behar who overcame throat cancer and regained his voice after months of intensive treatment. Mr. Amalesh Choudhury, a respected music school principal, was diagnosed with throat cancer after prolonged throat discomfort. Concerned about losing his voice central to both his profession and identity, he sought treatment at Manipal Hospital under Dr. Sourav Guha, Consultant Radiation Oncology.

Choudhury underwent 30 sessions of radiation therapy along with five cycles of chemotherapy. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, hospital officials said his disciplined approach and positive outlook contributed significantly to his recovery. “Throat cancers can be particularly distressing, especially for those dependent on their voice. Our focus was not only to treat the disease but also preserve vocal function,” Dr. Guha said, adding that early diagnosis and a coordinated treatment plan played a key role.

Recalling his journey, Choudhury said, “My biggest fear was losing my voice forever. The day I could sing again felt like I had found myself all over again.” Now recovered, he has resumed teaching, mentoring students, and participating in cultural events across Assam and nearby regions, marking a return to normal life after a challenging battle.
