Assam Pushes Immediate Renovation of Sribhumi–Sutarkandi Highway Amid Trade and Commuter Woes

The Assam government has pushed for urgent renovation of the NH-37 national highway stretch connecting Sribhumi town to the Sutarkandi border port, citing public inconvenience and the strategic importance of the route for regional trade and connectivity.MLA Krishnendu Paul has written to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requesting immediate repair and improvement of the highway section passing through Sribhumi town up to the international border point at Sutarkandi.

According to reports, residents and commuters have been facing difficulties for a long time due to the poor condition of the road. The damaged stretch has reportedly affected daily movement of local people as well as transportation activities in the region.In his communication to the Chief Minister, the legislator highlighted the growing public inconvenience and stressed the need for urgent intervention to restore the road infrastructure. Taking note of the matter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma subsequently wrote to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari seeking immediate and comprehensive repair of the highway stretch.

The NH-37 corridor linking Sribhumi to the Sutarkandi border port is considered strategically important as it serves as a major route for connectivity and trade between India and Bangladesh. The road is used extensively by commercial vehicles and transport operators engaged in cross-border trade activities through the Sutarkandi check post.
