Assam Becomes Third State to Implement UCC Law

BJP president Nitin Nabin has described the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly as a “historic” decision and said the legislation would help strengthen equal rights and a uniform civil system in the country.

Reacting to the development, Nabin said the Bharatiya Janata Party has always followed the principle of “justice for all and appeasement of none” and maintained that the new law reflects the party’s long-standing commitment towards equal justice.

“The passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly is a significant step towards equal rights and a uniform civil system across the country,” Nabin said in a post on social media platform X.

The Assam Assembly passed the UCC Bill on Wednesday after a discussion in the House. The legislation seeks to establish a common legal framework for matters related to marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships, irrespective of religion.

The Bill was passed despite opposition parties demanding that it be sent to a select committee for further examination and wider consultation. Members of the opposition raised concerns over certain provisions and sought more scrutiny before its implementation.

With the passage of the legislation, Assam became the third state in the country after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to pass a Uniform Civil Code law.

Nabin congratulated the Assam government and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for bringing the legislation.

“Following in the footsteps of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand and Gujarat, Assam has also implemented the Uniform Civil Code, powerfully demonstrating its commitment to social harmony and ensuring equal justice for all citizens,” he said.

The BJP leader further stated that such measures strengthen the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat” and promote national unity through a common civil framework.

The passage of the Bill marked one of the major legislative decisions taken during the current session of the Assam Assembly and is expected to trigger wider political and legal discussions in the coming days.
