Amit Shah Calls for ‘Detect, Disrupt and Destroy’ Strategy Against Drug Trafficking

Dibrugarh Police on Friday destroyed seized narcotic substances worth around Rs 1.4 crore as part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, highlighting the district’s sustained campaign against drug trafficking over the past nine months. The destroyed contraband included 271 grams of brown sugar and 77 kilograms of ganja, which had been seized during various anti-narcotics operations carried out by the police. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Singh said the narcotics destroyed on the occasion had been recovered in different operations conducted over the previous nine months. He said Dibrugarh Police registered 67 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act during the period, leading to the arrest of 112 accused.

The disposal of the seized drugs was carried out in accordance with legal procedures. Police officials said the exercise reflected their continued commitment to curbing drug trafficking and preventing the spread of substance abuse in the district. The destruction of the contraband formed part of the nationwide observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is marked every year on June 26 to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and to strengthen efforts against the illegal drug trade.

Meanwhile, speaking at the 10th Apex-Level Meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) in New Delhi on the same day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called for a “detect, disrupt and destroy” strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks. He urged all states and law enforcement agencies to enhance coordination, intelligence-sharing and joint operations to make the fight against narcotics more effective.
