Young scientist Dr Shekhar Suman Bora from Assam has brought international recognition to the state after receiving the prestigious ‘University Innovator Award’ at the 2026 Texas Innovation Conference & Awards held in the United States. The achievement has drawn praise from several quarters, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who described the recognition as a proud moment for both Assam and the country. In a message shared on social media on April 26, the Chief Minister congratulated Dr Bora and said the award reflected the growing role of Indian researchers and scientists in global scientific innovation. He said achievements like this show how Indian scientists are contributing to important areas of research and technology development across the world. Dr Bora, who is originally from Tezpur in Assam, is currently working as a research scientist at the University of Texas in the United States. He received the award for his contributions in the field of research and innovation, particularly for developing technologies that can be used in practical and real-world situations.
The ‘University Innovator Award’ is presented to researchers whose work has shown strong potential in creating useful technologies and solutions that can benefit industries, communities and society. The recognition is considered one of the important honours at the Texas Innovation Conference & Awards, an international event that brings together scientists, innovators, researchers and technology experts from different parts of the world. The 2026 edition of the conference was organised across Dallas and Fort Worth in Texas. The event saw participation from experts working in different scientific and technological fields, including artificial intelligence, engineering, advanced electronics, automation and emerging technologies. Before joining the University of Texas, Dr Bora worked at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, one of India’s leading scientific research institutions. During his career, he has worked in several advanced areas of science and technology including microelectronics, UAV-based sensing systems, artificial intelligence and low-power intelligent technologies. A major part of his research has focused on agriculture and the use of technology to improve farming systems. His work involves combining artificial intelligence with agricultural technologies to help improve productivity, efficiency and monitoring systems in the farming sector.
People familiar with his work said his research is aimed at creating practical solutions that can be used in everyday agricultural operations. His projects have focused on developing smart and energy-efficient systems that can support farmers and improve agricultural practices through technology-driven methods.Dr Bora’s recognition at an international platform has also been seen as an important moment for Assam, especially for young students and researchers from the Northeast who aspire to work in science and innovation. Many people from Assam took to social media to congratulate the scientist after news of the award became public. Several users described his achievement as inspiring and said it reflected the growing presence of talented researchers from the Northeast on the global stage.
