Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the main accused in the case linked to the death of Assam’s celebrated musician Zubeen Garg, has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail after his application was rejected by the Gauhati High Court.
According to legal sources, Mahanta moved the apex court following the denial of relief by the High Court. The matter has been listed for hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, where his plea for bail will be considered.
The development comes amid ongoing judicial proceedings in the high-profile case, which has drawn widespread public attention across Assam since the death of the renowned singer in September 2025.
Earlier, a Special Fast Track Court had rejected the bail applications of four other accused in the case — Sandipan Garg, Amritprabha Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya. The court directed that all four remain in judicial custody while the trial continues.
Before the High Court’s decision, detailed arguments were presented by both the defence and the prosecution during the hearing of Mahanta’s bail petition. The matter was heard by Justice Mitali Thakuria, who had reserved the order after completion of submissions from both sides.
During the proceedings, counsel appearing for Mahanta sought his release on bail, arguing in favour of granting relief. However, Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia opposed the plea and urged the court to reject the application.
