Siliguri District Hospital has strengthened its emergency and critical care services with the introduction of a portable ultrasonography (USG) machine, significantly improving diagnostic facilities for patients. The hospital, the second-largest government healthcare institution in Darjeeling district after North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, has also recently added a portable X-ray machine to enhance patient care.
The portable USG machine became operational on Wednesday and has been placed near the labour room to provide immediate ultrasound examinations during obstetric emergencies. Hospital authorities said the new facility will enable doctors to assess the condition of both the mother and the unborn child without transferring patients to another department, saving valuable time during critical situations.
Hospital Superintendent Chandan Ghosh said the equipment would help doctors make quicker clinical decisions during complicated deliveries, improving the chances of positive outcomes for both mothers and newborns.
Doctors at the hospital noted that the lack of a portable ultrasound machine previously caused delays, as patients had to be moved for diagnostic scans during emergencies. The new system is expected to ensure faster intervention whenever required.
The recently introduced portable X-ray machine has also improved services by allowing bedridden patients to undergo examinations in their respective wards without being shifted. Together, the new diagnostic facilities are expected to enhance emergency response, improve patient safety and strengthen the hospital’s overall healthcare services.
