Team India is all set for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning August 15 in Galle. India captain Shubman Gill will be one of the biggest players to watch, with the in-form batter standing on the brink of two major World Test Championship milestones.
Gill currently has 2,843 runs from 40 WTC matches and needs just 157 more to reach the 3,000-run mark. If he achieves the feat during the Sri Lanka series, he will become the first Indian batter in WTC history to score 3,000 runs.
Gill is currently India’s highest run-scorer in the WTC. Rishabh Pant follows him with 2,780 runs in 40 matches, while Rohit Sharma finished his WTC career with 2,716 runs.
England’s Joe Root leads the overall WTC batting charts with 6,651 runs from 77 matches. Gill will have a long way to go to challenge Root’s record, but reaching 3,000 runs would be a significant achievement for the Indian captain.
The 2025-27 WTC cycle offers Gill another opportunity to make history. He has scored 950 runs in eight matches since becoming India’s Test captain. With just 50 more runs, Gill can become the first Indian captain to score 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.
With two Tests against Sri Lanka ahead, Gill could achieve both milestones and further strengthen his position among India’s leading Test batters.
