SBI Leads Effort for Banking-Sector Threat Intelligence Network to Counter Cyber Risks

State Bank of India (SBI), the nation’s largest lender, has initiated a strategic movement alongside the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) to establish a structured, industry-wide framework for real-time cyber threat intelligence sharing among financial institutions. Speaking on the critical necessity of this cooperative infrastructure, SBI Chairman C.S. Setty emphasized that while current protocols mandate reporting security incidents to regulatory bodies and state law enforcement agencies, creating an official peer-to-peer network among banks is essential for executing swift, preventive counter-measures. As financial entities rapidly accelerate digital adoption, the expanding technological attack surface presents unprecedented security vulnerabilities that require collective vigil. Setty pointed out that digital expansion and robust security frameworks are not mutually exclusive, highlighting that maintaining absolute public trust in digital banking remains the industry’s ultimate priority. Addressing a recent data breach involving the bank, Setty stated that a thorough root-cause analysis is currently underway, though its immediate operational focus remained centered on containing the threat, mitigating exposed vulnerabilities, and implementing comprehensive remedial actions, which included conducting an extensive cybersecurity audit across all application programming interfaces (APIs). Alongside its cybersecurity push, the banking titan reported a stellar financial performance for the July-September quarter, posting a 14.3 percent year-on-year surge in net profit to ₹23,038 crore. This robust bottom-line performance was significantly boosted by an exceptional gain of ₹7,289 crore derived from divestment of a 6.3 percent stake in SBI Funds Management via a pre-IPO transaction and offer for sale. The bank’s net interest income grew by 14.7 percent year-on-year to hit ₹49,143 crore, compared to ₹42,847 crore recorded during the corresponding period last fiscal year. Furthermore, asset quality metrics demonstrated noticeable sequential improvements, with the gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio dropping from 1.47 percent in the preceding June quarter to 1.39 percent, while the net NPA ratio moderated slightly to 0.36 percent from 0.38 percent. The domestic net interest margin expanded by 11 basis points sequentially to settle at 3.11 percent, underscoring strong operational efficiency. Reaffirming its strategic trajectory, SBI retained its credit growth guidance of 14 to 15 percent and expressed full confidence in sustaining a net interest margin above the 3 percent threshold into fiscal year 2027. Through these dual efforts of leading sector-wide cybersecurity modernization and maintaining fiscal discipline, SBI reinforces its pivotal position as the bedrock of India’s evolving, highly digitized, and resilient financial ecosystem.
