Pawan Khera Appears Before Assam Crime Branch for Second Consecutive Day in Riniki Bhuyan Sarma Case

Pawan Khera on May 14 appeared before the Assam Police Crime Branch in Guwahati for the second consecutive day in connection with cases filed by Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

The cases were registered after Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed multiple passports and undisclosed foreign properties. The Congress leader was questioned for more than ten hours on Wednesday before being asked to appear again on Thursday morning.

Khera had reached the Crime Branch office around 10:30 am on Wednesday. Before entering the office, he told reporters that he had been summoned and had appeared in accordance with the law, adding that he respects the judiciary and legal process.

The questioning continued till Wednesday night, and Khera left the police station at around 9:15 pm. His legal team later confirmed that he had been asked to return again on Thursday.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India granted anticipatory bail to Khera on April 30 after he challenged the Gauhati High Court order dated April 24, which had denied him relief.

The apex court directed Khera to cooperate with the investigation and appear before the police whenever required.

Amid the ongoing legal and political developments, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma struck a lighter tone while speaking to reporters and expressed confidence about the state’s future.

He said that with the blessings of Kamakhya Temple and Mahamaya Maa Kamakhya, Assam would move forward over the next five years. He also remarked that Assam’s peda tastes good.

The Chief Minister made the comments shortly after attending official engagements following the formation of the new Assam government.

The issue has triggered a sharp political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress, with the matter reaching multiple courts, including the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court.
