One meal can become a lifeline, says Malabar Group’s Hunger Free World report

Marking World Hunger Day, Hunger Free World, a humanitarian initiative of Malabar Group, released a rehabilitation impact report highlighting how its Street Meal Distribution Programme has helped transform the lives of vulnerable people living on the streets through consistent food outreach and rehabilitation support. Titled “Impact Stories: How a Daily Meal Opens the Door to a Transformed Life”, the report documents cases where regular meal distribution led to medical assistance, shelter access, dignity restoration and family reunification. The programme is implemented on the ground by Thanal.

According to the report, the initiative was launched to address hunger through regular access to nutritious meals. Over time, it evolved into a platform for deeper intervention as field workers built trust with beneficiaries, enabling them to identify health issues, emotional distress and rehabilitation needs. The programme currently operates across 20 states in India and nine countries, including six GCC nations, the United States, the United Kingdom and Zambia. Through its Street Meal Distribution Programme and Micro Learning Centres, it reaches around 1.43 lakh beneficiaries.

“A meal may appear simple, but when it is delivered consistently and with human attention, it becomes much more than food,” said M. P. Ahammad, Chairman of Malabar Group, adding that sustained engagement helps create pathways to healthcare, rehabilitation and dignity restoration. The report highlights several success stories, including rehabilitation support for elderly and bedridden individuals, medical interventions for vulnerable citizens and a family reunification case involving a man traced from Udupi to Chennai through regular outreach efforts. The initiative forms part of Malabar Group’s broader CSR commitment, which allocates five per cent of its net trading profit towards social responsibility programmes focusing on hunger eradication, education, healthcare, housing, women empowerment and environmental sustainability.
