National Statistics Office, Guwahati celebrates 20th Statistics Day

The National Statistics Office (NSO), Regional Office, Guwahati, under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, celebrated the 20th Statistics Day on Monday, in collaboration with the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Government of Assam.
The theme for the 20th Statistics Day was “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data”. 
Reena Mech, Secretary T&D and Director DES Assam, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Retired Deputy Director General (ISS) and eminent writer Hiranya Borah and Prof. Amit Choudhury, HoD, Department of Statistics, Guwahati University attended the programme as guests of honour.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Utpal C.D. Gogoi, Senior Statistical Officer, Regional Office, Guwahati which was followed by an inaugural address on the theme of the 20th Statistics Day by Sankar Chakraborty, Assistant Director, Regional Office, Guwahati. Jishnu Datta, Deputy Director, C&QCD (NEZ), Guwahati, addressed the gathering and highlighted the contribution of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis to the modern India and importance of administrative data.
In his address, Prof. Amit Choudhury reflected on the life, achievements and legacy of Prof. (late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Prof. Choudhury delivered an insightful presentation on “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data.” This was followed by a presentation by Utpal Medhi, Joint Director, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Assam, along with his team, highlighting the use and potential of administrative data within the Government of Assam.Hiranya Borah discussed the theme, “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,” in the context of the Indian Statistical System and elaborated on the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis to the country’s statistical framework.
The event witnessed the participation of officers and officials of C&QCD (NEZ) and the Regional Office, Guwahati, officers and officials from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Assam, as well as students from various universities and colleges.
Since 2007, National Statistics Day is being celebrated on June 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prof. (Late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who is considered as the Father of Indian Statistics in India. The objective of the programme is to create awareness amongst the public, specially the younger generation for drawing inspiration from Professor (late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis about the role of statistics in socio economic planning and policy formulation. Statistics Day is celebrated every year with a theme of contemporary national importance for more focused attention.
