Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita held bilateral talks with newly appointed Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar during his official visit to Costa Rica as part of India’s efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean. Margherita represented India at the swearing-in ceremony of Costa Rica’s 50th President, Laura Fernández Delgado, in San José. During discussions with Foreign Minister Tovar, both sides focused on democracy, multilateralism and strengthening the rules-based international order. The meeting marked the first official interaction between the two leaders since Tovar assumed office.
On the sidelines of the visit, Margherita paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the University for Peace and inaugurated the “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” wall. He also planted a sapling under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative. The visit also highlighted growing India–Costa Rica cooperation in the technology sector. Margherita inaugurated a new office of Fujitsu in San José and held talks with Costa Rica’s Minister of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications, Paula Bogantes Zamora, to strengthen technology partnerships, support Indian businesses and promote capacity-building projects.
In Guwahati, India’s expanding engagement with Latin American countries could open fresh opportunities for Assam-based tea exporters, IT firms and small businesses looking to access emerging overseas markets. Business circles in Guwahati also view stronger diplomatic ties as beneficial for future trade exchanges and technology collaborations involving Northeast India.
