Millennials now account for 55 per cent of India’s C-suite, making them the largest generational group among senior executives, as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape leadership and decision-making, according to the latest research and platform data released by LinkedIn on Wednesday.
The report said Millennial representation in India’s C-suite has increased by 14.5 per cent over the past seven years, while leadership careers are becoming less linear. Executives with experience across multiple industries are rising, with single-industry experience among C-suite leaders falling from around 80 per cent to 58 per cent.
AI is also becoming central to business leadership, with 84 per cent of Indian C-suite leaders saying inputs from AI tools are now a key part of their decision-making process. The study found that 84 per cent believe AI is creating new roles within organisations, while nearly four in five executives feel pressure to adopt AI faster than they can effectively measure its impact. Among chief marketing officers (CMOs), 82 per cent reported facing this challenge.
LinkedIn India Country Manager and Vice President, LSS Product, KumareshPattabiraman, said India’s leadership landscape is entering a more demanding phase where executives must combine AI-driven insights with sound judgement, continuously learn new capabilities and bridge technology, talent and business functions to remain competitive.
The study also highlighted emerging leadership challenges, with 51 per cent of C-suite executives acknowledging uncertainty over the future skills and roles their organisations will require. At the same time, nearly nine in 10 leaders identified innovation as the primary objective of AI investments, shifting the focus beyond productivity to developing new products, improving customer experience and strengthening competitive advantage. AI-related capabilities, including AI Agents, AI Productivity, Retrieval Augmented Generation and AI Strategy, are now among the fastest-growing skills for senior executives.
The findings are particularly relevant for Kolkata’s growing IT, technology services, banking, consulting and startup ecosystem, where organisations are accelerating AI adoption and leadership transformation. Industry observers believe companies in the city are likely to place greater emphasis on recruiting executives with cross-functional experience and AI expertise as businesses modernise operations and compete in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
