Patients undergoing kidney transplants require lifelong care, discipline and regular medical monitoring, doctors at Medanta – The Medicity said while highlighting the growing need for kidney transplant awareness and post-operative care across the Northeast. In a statement issued on April 28, Gurugram-based Medanta, recently ranked India’s best hospital in 2026 by Newsweek, said kidney transplantation remains the preferred treatment for many patients suffering from end-stage renal disease caused by conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure.
Dr. Manish Jain, Senior Director, Nephrology at Medanta Gurugram, said awareness about post-transplant care is as important as understanding the surgery itself. “A transplant is not a one-time event but a long-term commitment. Patients require regular follow-ups and continued medications,” he said. He added that kidney transplantation offers advantages over dialysis, including longer survival, fewer dietary restrictions and improved quality of life, though patients remain vulnerable to infections due to immunosuppressant medicines.
According to the hospital, nearly two lakh people in India require kidney transplants every year, with most donations coming from living relatives. The hospital also stressed the importance of hygiene, healthy food habits, regular check-ups and emotional support from family members during recovery. In Guwahati, healthcare providers in the city are witnessing growing demand for specialised nephrology and transplant consultation services as awareness about chronic kidney disease rises in Assam and the wider Northeast region. The increasing presence of advanced healthcare outreach programmes and multilingual patient support services is also improving access to specialised treatment for patients from Guwahati and nearby states.
