India has stepped up preparations for the WorldSkills Competition 2026 in Shanghai by sending a 30-member contingent to participate in the Global Skills Challenge (GSC) 2026 in Australia. The team comprises 15 competitors and 15 experts who will represent the country at the international skills simulation event scheduled from June 23 to 29. Organised by WorldSkills Australia, the Global Skills Challenge serves as a full-scale rehearsal of the WorldSkills Competition, allowing participating nations to assess readiness, benchmark performance and gain exposure to international standards. Nearly 600 competitors, experts, translators and officials from member nations are expected to take part in the event.
Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Secretary Debashree Mukherjee said the challenge would provide Team India with valuable international experience and help competitors sharpen their skills ahead of Shanghai. National Skill Development Corporation CEO Arunkumar Pillai said the participants had earned their place through a rigorous selection process and urged them to remain focused and determined in the final phase of preparation. India will compete in 15 skill categories, including cloud computing, additive manufacturing, automobile technology, web technologies, graphic design, beauty therapy and industrial mechanics. The event is expected to enhance technical preparedness and familiarise participants with international evaluation systems.
In Guwahati, the initiative is significant for the Northeast’s growing skilling ecosystem. With increasing investments in vocational training, digital technologies and industry-linked education, exposure to global competitions could inspire more youth from Assam and neighbouring states to pursue specialised skills, strengthening the region’s contribution to India’s workforce and employment landscape.
