Heavy Rainfall Throws Guwahati Out of Gear, Waterlogging Hits City

Heavy rainfall since Sunday evening threw normal life out of gear in Guwahati, with severe waterlogging reported from several city localities. Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Hatigaon, and Rukminigaon are among the worst-hit areas. Stretches of arterial roads like the GS Road, RG Baruah Road, and MRD Road also went under water, causing massive traffic snarls. Commuters had to face immense inconvenience as they remained stranded in traffic jams for hours. In view of the situation arising out of the flash flood, the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administrators have declared closure of all educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area on Monday.

Residents have ruled that they had to endure similar situations after a heavy downpour with the government doing precious little to find a permanent solution to this perennial problem in Guwahati. A woman identified as Payal Nath lost her life after she slipped into an open drain in an inundated road in the Maligaon area of Guwahati. Though passersby pulled her out of the drain and rushed her to a hospital, she was declared dead on arrival by doctors.
