More than 23,000 people have been affected by urban flooding in different parts of Assam following heavy rainfall over the past few days, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rain and thunderstorms across several districts in the state.Officials said urban flooding has been reported in Kamrup (Metropolitan), Cachar and Sribhumi districts, disrupting normal life in many low-lying areas. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), four revenue circles and 12 villages have been inundated due to continuous rainfall. A total of 23,619 people have been affected by the flooding across the three districts.Cachar district reported the highest number of affected people at 15,617, while 8,002 people have been affected in Sribhumi district.
Waterlogging was also reported from several parts of Guwahati under Kamrup (Metropolitan), causing traffic congestion and inconvenience to residents.The ASDMA said no deaths or missing persons were reported during the last 24 hours.Rescue teams have, however, been deployed in affected areas. In Sribhumi district, personnel of the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) rescued 53 stranded people along with three animals from flood-hit locations.Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has forecast more rainfall in different parts of Assam over the next 24 hours.The IMD has issued an orange alert for Sribhumi, Hailakandi, Cachar and Dima Hasao districts, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
A yellow alert has also been sounded for 20 other districts, including Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.Weather officials said several districts are likely to continue receiving moderate to heavy rainfall over the next two days. Authorities have been asked to remain prepared for possible waterlogging, localised flooding and disruption in vulnerable areas.
