Guwahati Hosts Key Meeting Between Tshering Tobgay and Assam Leadership

Dasho Tshering Tobgay on Monday met Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati, with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between Bhutan and Northeast India, particularly Assam. Tobgay, who arrived in Assam earlier in the day on an official visit, called on the Governor at Lok Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. According to an official statement, the meeting covered a wide range of issues aimed at boosting cooperation and further deepening ties in the larger interest of the northeastern region. A cultural evening showcasing Assam’s rich heritage and hospitality was also organized in honor of the visiting Bhutanese Prime Minister. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, said Assam is playing a crucial role in strengthening the longstanding relationship between India and Bhutan.

“Bharat and Bhutan share a very special civilisational relationship. Assam is playing a pivotal role in strengthening this relationship, which will define the growth of the South Asian region in the 21st century,” Sarma stated. Earlier, Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora received the Bhutan Prime Minister at State Guest House No. 1 in Koinadhora, Guwahati. Senior officials, including Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and General Administration Department Secretary Narsing Pawar, were also present. Welcoming the visiting dignitary, Bora said Assam and Bhutan share deep historical and socio-cultural ties rooted in mutual trust, harmony and long-standing cooperation across multiple sectors. He expressed confidence that Tobgay’s visit would further strengthen the special bond between Assam and Bhutan and open new avenues for goodwill, cooperation and cultural exchange. Bhutan shares close geographic and cultural relations with Assam, particularly through the western and northern districts bordering the Himalayan kingdom, with ties spanning trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
