An elderly farmer was allegedly assaulted and tied up by unidentified miscreants who later fled with two buffaloes from a border area in Assam’s Sribhumi district, according to a complaint submitted before the authorities.
The incident reportedly took place on Saturday afternoon near Bilbari, along the India-Bangladesh border under Patharkandi Police Station jurisdiction.
The victim has been identified as Alauddin, a resident of Durganagar Angura Gram Panchayat under Nilambazar Police Station. He was reportedly grazing his buffaloes in agricultural fields near the Bilbari BSF camp when the alleged attack took place.
According to Alauddin and his family members, a group of unidentified men allegedly attacked him around 4 pm, tied his hands and legs with gamchas, assaulted him, and escaped with two buffaloes.
The farmer was later rescued after his grandson reportedly heard his cries for help and reached the spot. Family members subsequently visited the area and alleged that the border fencing wires had been cut and that the buffaloes were taken across the border.
Alauddin, who sustained injuries in the attack, was initially provided primary medical treatment before being referred to Karimganj Civil Hospital for further care.
Speaking to the media, Alauddin alleged that he was returning home when several unidentified persons attacked him with a “dao” and severely beat him. He claimed that the attackers tied his hands and legs with gamchas and dragged him for a considerable distance.
Expressing concern over border security, Alauddin questioned how the miscreants managed to enter the area despite the presence of security arrangements.
The victim has alleged that the attackers were Bangladeshi nationals. His family members have submitted a written complaint at the Baraigram Watch Post, seeking legal action against those responsible.
Police have visited the site and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
