In one of the first decisions of the new government in Assam, Devajit Saikia has been reappointed as the Advocate General for a fresh term of five years, ensuring continuity in the state’s legal leadership. Chief Minister Sarma announced the decision during his media interaction following the first cabinet meeting of the new government. Notably, Devajit Saikia stepped down from the post on May 6, following the end of the tenure of the previous government. The resignation was in line with the constitutional convention, after serving a nearly five-year term since his appointment in 2021. In 2021, Saikia became the youngest Advocate General of Assam, assuming office at the age of 52 years and one month. Over the years, he emerged as a key legal figure in the state, representing the government in several important constitutional and legal matters as its chief legal advisor. Devajit Saikia, a former first-class cricketer, is currently also serving as the Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
