Counselling plays key role in helping couples make informed IVF decisions

Couples considering IVF treatment should receive detailed counselling before beginning the process, as informed discussions can help them better understand diagnosis, treatment options, success rates and emotional preparedness, according to fertility experts. Dr. Kalpana Jain, Fertility Specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, said many couples arrive for their first IVF consultation carrying anxiety, unanswered questions and expectations about finding a clear path forward. However, the consultation process often introduces multiple decisions that need careful consideration.

She said counselling is essential because treatment should begin only after a complete diagnosis is established for both partners. Understanding previous tests, identifying missing investigations and evaluating medical history are critical before recommending any treatment plan. Dr. Jain added that IVF may not always be the first treatment option for every couple. She stressed that couples should clearly understand why IVF is being recommended, why it is suitable for their specific condition and why other options may not be appropriate.

She also noted that IVF success rates should not be viewed only as percentages, but in the context of a couple’s age, diagnosis and medical history. Counselling also helps couples prepare emotionally for the process, including possible delays and setbacks, which experts say are among the reasons some discontinue treatment early. Experts advise couples to ask questions about required tests, treatment protocols, realistic success expectations and the overall financial cost before starting IVF treatment.
