Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday (May 5) said that the party fully accepts the people’s mandate in the Assembly elections and will continue working for the development of Assam both inside and outside the Assembly.
Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Gogoi expressed gratitude to voters who supported the Congress and emphasized that the party would also reach out to those who did not vote in its favour.
“We accept the people’s mandate. We thank those who voted for us and supported us. Congress will also reach out to those who did not vote for us,” he said.
He also acknowledged the efforts of grassroots party workers who stood by the Congress despite challenges during the campaign. “We have seen a new Congress,” he added.
Gogoi extended his gratitude to senior leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Jitendra Singh for their support during the elections.
Admitting that the party fell short of expectations, he said Congress would continue to offer constructive suggestions for Assam’s development and remain committed to the people.
Commenting on the results, Gogoi noted that while the party had expected close contests in several constituencies, the final outcomes in many seats were surprising.
“People have not fully accepted these results. We expected a neck-and-neck fight, but the outcome in many seats is difficult to comprehend,” he said.
He also announced that a meeting of newly elected Congress MLAs will be held on May 9 to decide the party’s future course of action.
