Sonarpur-born filmmaker Prasenjit Chakraborty’s independent Hindi film Chindi Pakad has unveiled its trailer and music at an event at PVR in Mumbai, with veteran actors Rakesh Bedi and Makarand Deshpande attending as chief guests. Set around massive dumping grounds, the film explores the lives of ragpickers and the challenges they face, including poverty, addiction, exploitation, family struggles and the fight for dignity. The trailer presents a stark world where garbage heaps become a backdrop for broken relationships, unfulfilled dreams and hopes of a better life.
Chakraborty, who has directed and written the film, said the project seeks to tell the stories of people who are often seen but remain socially invisible. The cast includes Chittrali Das, Rajkumar Dwivedi, Manoj Karotia, Mussu and Debranjan Nag. The film premiered at the Marche du Film during the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where its poster was unveiled by Boman Irani and Makarand Deshpande. It later secured selections and recognition at international festivals, including the Bangkok Movie Awards.
With Chakraborty’s roots in Sonarpur, the film could attract interest in Kolkata and surrounding regions, particularly among audiences seeking socially relevant and independent cinema. Music for the film features Javed Ali, Mohammed Irfan and Shruti Pathak, with Suman Mitra composing and Priyam Ji writing the lyrics. Theatre King by Lav Singh is handling its theatrical distribution in India.
