Dedicated Freight Corridors reshape India’s freight transportation network

The operationalisation of Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) is transforming India’s freight transportation network by providing faster, higher-capacity and more reliable rail connectivity between major industrial, manufacturing and logistics centres.

India’s existing DFC network comprises the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), running from New Sahnewal in Punjab through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to New Sonnagar in Bihar, and the 1,506-km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), connecting New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with New JNPT in Maharashtra through Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Together, the two corridors span approximately 2,843 km.

The Union Budget this year also announced a third DFC linking Dankuni in West Bengal with Gujarat via Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. The proposed corridor is expected to expand the dedicated freight network and strengthen links between industrial and logistics centres.

In Kolkata, the proposed Dankuni-Gujarat corridor could strengthen West Bengal’s connectivity with major industrial and logistics markets across eastern and western India. Dankuni’s inclusion in the dedicated freight network is expected to improve long-distance goods movement and support more streamlined supply chains.

The DFC network has also enabled direct movement of double-stack container trains to important ports, increasing freight capacity. Faster freight trains are reducing pressure on existing railway routes while creating additional capacity for passenger operations and improving overall infrastructure utilisation.
