Oldest captive Assam’s elephant dies at 89

On Monday, India’s oldest surviving captive elephant dies at 89 years in a sprawling tea estate in Assam. About the aged elephant, earlier forest department reported that he was rescued from the wild in the 1940s, and extensively used in tea garden work, when Britishers owned the Borgang tea estate in Assam’s Sonitpur district. Assam Police seized 61,000 bottles of banned cough syrup from a truck in Assam. The bottles had a market value of Rs. 4 crore. According to the sources, the incident took place in the Churaibari area of Assam’s Karimganj district near the border with Tripura on August 17. Police said, “Our operation against drugs is going on. Last night, we intercepted a truck. We have recovered and seized 61,000 banned cough syrup bottles from the truck.
