Publication of newspapers and broadcasting of news by local cable networks will remain suspended indefinitely once again as journalists resumed their cease work strike on Friday even as the state government appealed to the state media not to resort to news blackout. Liquor to be cheaper in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya Cabinet on Friday reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on various brands of liquor by bringing it down from 40 per cent to 37.5 per cent as well as do away with the 25 per cent lifting charges. Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla said that the decision to reduce VAT would not affect the revenue generation, because the volume of sales would increase after the price of liquor has come down. As many as 141 farmers have committed suicide in Chhattisgarh in the last 10 months, the state government informed the legislative Assembly on Friday.The issue of farmer suicides rocked the Assembly, with the opposition BJP demanding a probe into these cases and seeking compensation for the kin of deceased farmers.
