Shocking video of a baby elephant being tortured

The incident reportedly took place on October 12 in Shalbagan area near Lanka Town in Assam's Hojai district, where a baby elephant was tortured by some mob. The video of the incident shared on Twitter by @TheViditsharma called for help from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sharma and animal activists. The visuals show the baby elephant running for its life as a group of men chase it even as they try to pull its tail and beat it. The baby elephant, mistreated by villagers, got separated from its mother when villagers drove away a herd, according to sources.

Tight security for drug cases, since May: Assam

Rural roads in Himachal Pradesh to get upgraded

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Rural Road Scheme in Himachal Pradesh. The project is known as Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)-III. The project is to upgrade 3,125 km of rural roads of Himachal Pradesh. According to sources, more than Rs 420 crore has been sanctioned by the central government under this phase of the PMGSY-III for upgrading 440 km of rural roads in 15 border and far-flung blocks of the state.

Arrested Government officials for getting involved in illegal activities

A government employee from the Transport Department was detained as he was involved in illegal activities. According to GP Singh, Special DGP, Assam, “The government officer, namely Sameswar Brahma Muchahary, 54, was detained by the Kokrajhar district police and is reportedly involved in many illicit operations.” Another one, Assam Directorate Vigilance and Anti-Corruption caught an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in the act of receiving bribes and detained him in the Lakhimpur district.

Dhemaji flood situation worsen

39,000 people have been affected due to the flood in the Dhemaji district. According to sources, heavy rains in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have submerged 76 villages under four revenue circles - Dhemaji, Jonai, Sisborgaon and Gogamukh, several 'new areas' thus raising water levels in many rivers in the district. On the other hand, at least 10 villages named Dihiri Chapri, Dihiri Kachari, Tingharia, No. 2 Changmai Daloni, No. 3 Kamalpur, Azarbari, Tinsukia Kekuri, Dihiri Lepong of Jiadhal area have been affected by the flood. About 70,000 people have been affected by the floods in five districts of Assam.

Assam-Meghalaya Border meeting to be held on October 14

The first meeting of the Regional Committee for West Khasi Hill District will be held on October 14 under the leadership of the Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE) – Renikton Lyngdoh Tonghar. Tonghar said that "We will consider the views and recommendations of the committee members and concerned stakeholders, who have a wealth of knowledge on border issues. We hope they will provide us with valuable input." Also, all traditional heads of 39 villages, who have expressed their desire to join Meghalaya, were also invited to the meeting.

President of India, Murmu to visit Tripura & Assam

President Droupadi Murmu will be visiting Tripura and Assam to attend some specific programs on Wednesday. The President will be on three days visit, the statement was issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan. New Chief Justice for High Court elevated

Justice P B Varale of the Bombay High Court was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court while Justice AM Magrey, a judge of the Jammu and Kashmir HC, was appointed its chief justice. Rs 47 crore heroine seized in Assam

A joint team of BSF and Assam Police recovered the heroine worth Tk 47 crore from a truck in Karimganj. The heroin weighs around 9.47 kg and it is worth an estimated Rs 47.4 crore. The driver of the truck has been detained and is being questioned for further details, the official said.
