The incident reportedly took place on October 12 in Shalbagan area near Lanka Town in Assam's Hojai district, where a baby elephant was tortured by some mob. The video of the incident shared on Twitter by @TheViditsharma called for help from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sharma and animal activists. The visuals show the baby elephant running for its life as a group of men chase it even as they try to pull its tail and beat it. The baby elephant, mistreated by villagers, got separated from its mother when villagers drove away a herd, according to sources.

Rural roads in Himachal Pradesh to get upgraded

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Rural Road Scheme in Himachal Pradesh. The project is known as Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)-III. 39,000 people have been affected due to the flood in the Dhemaji district. According to sources, heavy rains in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have submerged 76 villages under four revenue circles - Dhemaji, Jonai, Sisborgaon and Gogamukh, several 'new areas' thus raising water levels in many rivers in the district.
