BSF-BGB Face-Off in Assam’s Sribhumi Over Alleged Pushback Bid, Border Tensions Escalate

Tension prevailed along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Friday after an alleged pushback attempt triggered a face-off between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The incident took place in the Bilbari border area, where the situation remained tense throughout the day. According to reports, the confrontation began after an attempt was allegedly made to push a group of Bangladeshi nationals towards the New Pallathal area on the Bangladesh side of the international border.

The BGB reportedly objected to the move and prevented the group from entering Bangladeshi territory.

As news of the incident spread, residents of nearby border villages gathered near the border carrying knives, sticks and bamboo poles in support of the BGB, further escalating tensions in the area.

Reports said personnel from the BGB’s Pallathal Border Outpost repeatedly issued warnings to the BSF through loudspeakers, urging the force not to carry out any alleged “illegal pushback” and to move away from the border.

The BGB also reportedly warned that it would be compelled to open fire if the situation escalated and if the people involved were not withdrawn from the border area.

The incident heightened tensions along the international border in Sribhumi district. However, no reports of casualties or exchange of fire had emerged till the filing of this report.
