Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri on Friday said the flood-hit northeastern state of Assam needs immediate attention and assistance as it battles loss of lives and displacement of people in many of its submerged districts. The floods have so far claimed more than 70 lives and displaced nearly 40 lakh people in 26 districts of the state. Nearly 90% of the Kaziranga National Park is reportedly submerged. The Uttar Pradesh Government has in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court on Friday denied the allegations that Vikas Dubey was killed in a "fake" encounter. The court had on July 14 while hearing two PILs seeking a court-monitored probe into the "encounter" killing of Dubey and his aides allowed UP Police to place its views before the court. Heavy rains lashed the districts of north Bengal, leading to flooding in low lying areas of Jalpaiguri and other places on Saturday, even as the MeT department forecast heavy to very heavy showers in the region for the next two days. Several places in Mainaguri block were inundated owing to heavy rains, officials said. People in the low-lying areas are being removed to safer places, they said.
