The central election committee of the BJP on Friday approved Devasish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election.
The bypoll is scheduled on October 6, 2026.
A former IAS officer who had taken voluntary retirement while serving as the Nagaon DC earlier this month, Sharma had joined the BJP on September 8 and was subsequently given a party ticket to contest the by-poll.
The announcement comes amid parties in the state gearing up for the by-poll, the results of which will be declared on October 9, 2026.
The by-election to Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency was necessitated in the wake of Pradyut Bordoloi, who had won the constituency on a Congress ticket in 2024, vacating the seat ahead of the state Assembly polls earlier this year.
Bordoloi thereafter joined the BJP and won from Dispur in the Assembly polls.
Speaking to mediapersons, Sharma thanked the central party leadership as well as chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and party leaders and members in the state BJP for their guidance and the faith reposed in him as a candidate for the by-poll.
“I would also like to thank the people of Nagaon for the love and affection they have shown me,” he said.
Pledging to work with discipline, Sharma said “I want to now devote myself to work for the people, like I had done during my stint as a bureaucrat.”
