A debate has intensified over the proposal to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve to just one kilometre. Conservationists argue that such a move would undermine decades of protection and insist that the buffer width must be determined scientifically through an independent study involving local communities. Setting a rare precedent in legal history, the court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge in Dibrugarh sentenced five accused to life imprisonment in separate cases. The prosecution stated that this is the first time in the district that five persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment on the same day. The security team arrested a youth for allegedly maintaining secret links with a Pakistan-based terrorist network.
