Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has summoned MLA Ramakanta Deuri to its office for questioning in connection with allegations of irregularities in the Fishery Corporation recruitment process. According to the allegations, the recruitment scam took place during Deuri’s tenure as the Chairman of the Fishery Corporation. It has been alleged that 168 candidates were appointed illegally in exchange for money. Assam Police have arrested four employees of the Sribhumi District Jail for allegedly facilitating the entry of mobile phones and narcotic substances into the correctional facility, officials said on Wednesday. The arrested individuals include two assistant jailers and two warders. They have been identified as Rudra Deori, Subhasish Ghosh, Masid Ali Laskar and Biswajit Baruah. Assam has recorded the highest number of deaths due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in India over the past nine years, accounting for nearly 62 per cent of all fatalities reported across the country during the period.According to data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), Assam reported 3,767 positive JE cases between 2018 and March 2026. During the same period, the state recorded 609 deaths, while the rest of India reported 376 deaths, highlighting Assam’s continued vulnerability to the mosquito-borne disease.In 2018, Assam registered 509 JE cases and 94 deaths.
