The Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh today commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, one of modern India’s foremost nationalist thinkers, distinguished educationists, parliamentarians, and the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, with solemnity and reverence at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati.
The commemorative programme was led by the President of BJP Assam Pradesh, Dilip Saikia, in the presence of senior party leaders and karyakartas, who offered floral tributes and reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the ideals of cultural nationalism, constitutional unity, national integration, and selfless public service championed by Dr. Mookherjee.
Addressing the gathering, Saikia stated that Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee fortnight is being observed across the country from birth anniversary on June 23 to his death anniversary on July 6 to commemorate the life, vision, and sacrifices of one of the principal architects of modern nationalist thought in India. He highlighted Dr. Mookherjee’s immense contributions to Indian education, noting that in 1934, at the age of just 33, he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Under his leadership, the university undertook significant academic reforms, including the promotion of Indian languages and mother tongue based education, thereby laying the intellectual foundations for an education system rooted in India’s own civilizational ethos. Saikia further observed that Dr. Mookherjee was among the earliest leaders to advocate coalition-based democratic politics by conceptualising the National Democratic Front, reflecting his belief in building broad nationalist consensus while preserving ideological clarity.
