Hindi has been included in the official proceedings of the Assam Assembly. From Monday, the start of the budget session, the state government has decided to include Hindi along with Assamese, English and Bodo in the House proceedings.
With this decision, Hindi has for the first time received recognition as an official language of the Assam Assembly proceedings. The proposal was unanimously adopted at the General Purposes Committee meeting held on Saturday.
Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das informed that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Piyush Hazarika, Minister Keshab Mahanta, Leader of Opposition Wajed Ali Choudhury and other members from both the ruling and opposition sides were present at the meeting.
The Speaker said the decision was taken keeping in mind the linguistic convenience of the members. He said, “This arrangement has been made for members who wish to present their statements in Hindi, the national language of the country.”
The 16th Assam Assembly’s budget session will begin on July 6 and continue till July 31. The session will have a total of 21 working days, with the state budget to be presented on July 10.
Meanwhile, it has also been decided to change the name of the Assembly’s television channel. The channel, so far known as ‘ALA TV’, will now be called ‘Assam Assembly TV’.
Regarding this, Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das said that steps will be taken to make the channel stronger on the lines of Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV, so that a larger number of people can easily watch the Assembly proceedings.
