Anti-Narcotics Operation Uncovers Suspected Heroin, Gold in Railway Colony

In a major anti-drug operation, Dibrugarh Police arrested nine persons and seized suspected heroin, cash and gold ornaments during a raid conducted at Harijan Colony near the Dibrugarh Town Railway Station.

The operation was carried out as part of an ongoing drive against drug trafficking in the district. Police said the raid was launched following intelligence gathered during a series of anti-narcotics operations conducted across different parts of Dibrugarh over the past week.

Speaking to the media, Nayan Moni Baruah said the district police have been carrying out sustained efforts to identify and dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in the area. According to him, information collected during recent investigations pointed towards the Railway Colony area, locally known as “Koyla Patti”, as a possible source of narcotics being supplied to different locations.

Acting on the intelligence inputs, police teams conducted a surprise raid in the locality on Saturday. During the operation, several houses were searched and nine individuals were taken into custody.

Police recovered around 79 grams of suspected heroin, cash amounting to ₹4.92 lakh and a quantity of gold ornaments from the residence of a woman identified as Sujata Biswas. The seized items have been taken into police custody and are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

Baruah said the operation was conducted under the supervision of the district police administration as part of a wider campaign to curb the illegal drug trade in Dibrugarh and nearby areas.

“Over the last week, police teams have carried out raids at various locations. During the course of the investigation, information suggested that the source of the drugs was the Railway Colony area. Based on that intelligence, a surprise operation was conducted, leading to the arrest of nine persons and the seizure of suspected heroin, cash and gold ornaments,” he said.

Police officials said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the narcotics and identify others who may be linked to the alleged drug network. Investigators are also examining possible links between the accused and suppliers operating outside the district.

Authorities are additionally verifying whether any of those arrested are employees of the Indian Railways. Baruah said that if any accused is found to be a railway employee, the matter will be formally taken up with railway authorities and appropriate departmental action will be sought.

The raid is part of Assam Police’s intensified campaign against narcotics trafficking, with law enforcement agencies continuing efforts to dismantle drug networks and prevent the spread of illegal substances across Upper Assam.
